Insurance and Cost
Insured Patients: We know medical billing and insurance can be confusing, our office staff works with patients every day to help them understand what costs, if any, may be required. No procedures or authorisations will be obtained without your direct input and knowledge. The out of pocket fees are dependant on the 'item numbers' related to your surgery, and we use the Insurance Known Gap Scheme* when we can. All our patients find our fees very fair given the high level of care we provide.
Uninsured Patients: We do not differentiate between patients with or without health insurance requesting a consultation with Mr Karametos. If an operation or hospital admission is required, this is usually organised through the public hospital system.
Self-funding Patients: Please note that you will not be able to choose your surgeon or date of the surgery in the public system. As a result, sometimes uninsured patients decide to self-fund to have their surgeries in a private hospital by Mr, Steven Karametos. Please note there are three parts to the overall costs: private hospital fees (usually the greatest), surgeon fees, anaesthetist & surgical assistant fees. We will provide you with the 'item numbers' required to facilitate a quote from all parties. After surgery, you will be able to make a partial claim on the doctors' fees through Medicare. Please call us on 03 9857 3600 for more information regarding self-funding for hernia surgery.
Workcover Patients: When the hernia is work-related, we offer No-Gap consultation and hernia surgery to all eligible Workcover patients. Please bring the Approval for Surgery letter from your employer's insurer and case number to your initial consultation with us.
In-hospital checkups (usually daily) until discharge and post-operative appointment at the rooms are included.
* Subject to choice of insurance and level of cover.
